Your adventure begins with pick-up from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco between 4:15 and 4:45 AM. The exact pick-up time will be confirmed after your reservation, once we receive the name and address of your accommodation. From Cusco, we will travel south through traditional Andean villages and beautiful mountain landscapes as the sun rises over the Andes.
After approximately two hours of driving, we will arrive in Cusipata, where you will enjoy a hearty Andean breakfast prepared with fresh local ingredients. This stop is the perfect opportunity to relax, recharge your energy, and prepare for the hike.
Once breakfast is finished, we will continue by tourist transportation for approximately one more hour toward the community of Palcoyo, the starting point of the hike. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular high-altitude scenery and may see llamas and alpacas grazing across the surrounding hills.
Upon arrival at the trailhead, your guide will provide a short briefing about the route, weather conditions, altitude, and recommended walking pace. We will then begin the hike toward the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains. The trail is shorter and less demanding than the classic Rainbow Mountain route, making it a great option for travelers looking for a more relaxed hiking experience.
During the hike, you will see three impressive rainbow-colored mountains, formed by mineral deposits and natural oxidation over millions of years. Their colorful layers create one of the most remarkable landscapes in the Peruvian Andes. Your guide will explain the geological, cultural, and environmental importance of the area while giving you time to enjoy the views and take photographs.
A short distance from the rainbow mountains, we will continue toward the extraordinary Stone Forest, a unique area filled with tall and unusual rock formations shaped naturally by wind and erosion. From this section of the route, you can also enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and, on clear days, the snow-capped Ausangate Mountain.
The complete visit to the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains and Stone Forest takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the group’s pace and weather conditions. After exploring the area, we will walk back along the same trail to the Palcoyo community, where our transportation will be waiting.
We will then return to Cusipata for a well-deserved buffet lunch at a local restaurant. The meal includes a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes, salads, side dishes, and vegetarian options. This is a great moment to rest and share your experience with the other travelers.
After lunch, we will begin the return journey to Cusco, once again passing through beautiful Andean villages and landscapes. We expect to arrive in Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 PM. The tour finishes at the Machu Picchu Team office near Plaza Regocijo, just a short walk from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. Upon prior request, we can also drop you off at the Cusco airport or bus terminal.
