Pre-Trek Briefing
A mandatory pre-trek briefing is held at the Machu Picchu Team office in Cusco at 6:00 PM on the day before departure. During this meeting, your guide will review the complete itinerary, explain the trail and weather conditions, provide packing recommendations, answer your questions, and confirm the hotel pick-up time. You will also receive your duffel bag, in which you may pack up to 7 kilograms of personal belongings. The duffel bag will be transported by pack horses during the trek.
CHANGES, CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
Date Changes and Rescheduling
Requests to change your departure date must be submitted as early as possible by email or WhatsApp. Rescheduling is subject to the availability of professional guides, private transportation, local guesthouses, cooks, muleteers, pack horses, entrance tickets, and confirmed group departures. Services that have already been booked or paid to local suppliers may be non-refundable. Any additional expenses resulting from a date change, such as new entrance tickets, accommodation reservations, transportation, or staffing costs, must be paid by the traveler. Customer Cancellation Policy
A non-refundable deposit of USD 180 per person is required to confirm the reservation.
For cancellations made more than 48 hours before departure, the non-refundable deposit and the cost of any services already confirmed or paid to local suppliers will be deducted. Any remaining eligible balance may be refunded. For cancellations made within 48 hours of departure, no refund will be provided. Travelers who do not attend the pre-arranged hotel pick-up, arrive too late to begin the trek, or fail to participate on the confirmed departure date will be considered a no-show. No refund, credit, or rescheduling will be provided in these circumstances. Online card-processing fees, bank charges, exchange-rate differences, currency-conversion costs, and payments already made to guides, cooks, muleteers, guesthouses, transportation providers, entrance administrators, or other local suppliers are non-refundable.
Cancellation or Changes by Machu Picchu Team
The itinerary may be modified, postponed, or cancelled when circumstances make the original route unsafe or impossible to operate. These circumstances may include severe weather, landslides, road closures, trail damage, flooding, fires, strikes, social unrest, government restrictions, medical emergencies, or other events beyond our control. When possible, Machu Picchu Team may offer one of the following alternatives:
- A new departure date
- A modified itinerary
- An alternative trekking route or activity of comparable value
- A refund for services that were not provided and remain recoverable from local suppliers
Refunds cannot be guaranteed for services that have already been used, reserved, paid, or declared non-refundable by third-party providers.

Is Choquequirao harder than Machu Picchu?
Yes, significantly. The Choquequirao trek is one of the most demanding hikes in Peru. Each day involves elevation changes of 1,200 to 1,500 meters on steep, narrow trails with no cable car or train option. The round trip from Cachora covers approximately 60 km over 4 days. That said, the difficulty is also what makes it special only around 30 visitors reach Choquequirao per day, compared to thousands at Machu Picchu, giving you an exclusive and almost solitary experience at an equally impressive Inca citadel.
How do you get to Choquequirao?
Choquequirao is currently accessible only by foot. The trek begins in Cachora, a small village approximately 3.5 hours from Cusco by road. From there, the trail descends steeply into the Apurímac Canyon before climbing back up to the ruins. There is no road, no cable car, and no shortcut the remoteness is precisely what has kept Choquequirao largely undiscovered. A cable car project has been proposed but as of 2026 it has not been built.
What will I see at Choquequirao?
Choquequirao is an extensive Inca citadel believed to have been a royal estate of the Inca Túpac Yupanqui. The site covers over 1,800 hectares, though only about 40% has been excavated. Highlights include ceremonial plazas, water channels, residential terraces, and the iconic Lower Terraces decorated with white stone llamas a unique feature found nowhere else in the Inca world. On the trek you will also cross the dramatic Apurímac Canyon, traverse cloud forest, and pass through small Andean communities.
